Dr Johnny Malone-Leigh has joined the Solar Tsunamis project, taking up the role of deployment lead on the MANA project (Magnetometer Array for New Zealand Aotearoa) . Johnny’s role will be focused on the managing the magnetometer network, which monitors magnetic field variations across New Zealand during space weather events and geomagnetic storms. This can be used in combination with computer modelling to estimate impact to the NZ power grid. Prior to this, Johnny recently completed his PhD between the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. For this project, he modelled the ground-based effects of geomagnetic storms across Ireland and the potential impact on the power grid, using magnetometer and electrometer measurements.
